Where Clean Bee Began: Princeton, Montgomery, and the Roads in Between

The first homes I ever cleaned were in Princeton, New Jersey.

I didn't know much about this part of the state back then. I knew the work, and I knew I wanted to do it well. What I didn't know was that these drives down Route 1 and onto the back roads would give me something much bigger than a schedule. They gave me a place to belong.

My Princeton

In between homes, I started to find my own little places. A coffee at Small World became part of my routine, the kind of stop that makes a long day feel shorter. When I had a free afternoon, I'd go to the Princeton University Art Museum and just wander. I'm a detail person by nature, and I could stand in front of old stonework and stained glass for a long time, noticing things. On quieter days I'd walk the trails in Institute Woods and let my mind rest. And when I needed a real lunch, Ayat was where I went.

None of those places are on a cleaning checklist. But they're a big part of why this area stopped feeling like somewhere I worked and started feeling like somewhere I belonged.

Learning a place one season at a time

When you clean the same homes week after week, you start to measure the year differently. You notice when the light changes in a kitchen in late September. You notice the first morning the leaves on a street have turned gold, and a month later when they're piled against the curb. You see the first snow on a front walk, and then, in April, the same walk lined with daffodils.

Some of my favorite drives are the winding roads out toward Montgomery. For years I passed open farmland on the way to a client's house — fields that went on and on, the kind of quiet you forget exists so close to everything else. Over time, I watched some of those fields become new neighborhoods. It was strange at first, seeing a place I knew change. But those new streets brought new families, and some of those families became my clients too. That's the thing about this area: it keeps growing, and it keeps making room.

The families who welcomed me

I'll never forget how kind people were to me in those early years. I was young, still finding my footing in this country, and still learning how to run anything bigger than my own day. The families in Princeton didn't just hire me. They trusted me with their homes, their keys, their kids' bedrooms, the rooms where they kept their most personal things.

Some of those clients became friends. A few became something more like mentors. They'd ask how business was going — and then actually listen to the answer. They gave me advice I still use. They referred me to neighbors. They were patient while I figured things out.

I've been cleaning some of these same homes ever since. I've watched kids go from toddlers leaving crayons on the floor to teenagers leaving for college. I've been there for new babies, new puppies, renovations, and moves. I don't take that lightly. It's a privilege to be part of someone's home for that long.

What they taught me

Looking back, the lessons that turned me from a house cleaner into a business owner came from those kitchens and living rooms as much as anywhere else:

Show up when you say you will. Trust is built on the ordinary weeks, not the impressive ones. The families who've kept me for years didn't stay because of one perfect clean — they stayed because I was reliable every single time.

Treat every home like it's the only one. A family's home holds their whole life. My clients taught me that care is noticed, even in the corners nobody else looks at.

Relationships are the business. Almost every good thing that happened to Clean Bee in the early years came from one client telling another. You can't buy that. You earn it, one home at a time.

The Clean Bee family

Today Clean Bee is bigger than just me. We have a team, and we serve homes from Jersey City all the way down to Princeton. But when I think about what this company is, I still think about those first houses — and the people inside them who made room for me.

To our long-time clients: you're part of the Clean Bee family, and so is everyone who has joined us along the way. Thank you for the trust, the patience, the referrals, the advice, and the coffee on cold mornings. Thank you for letting me be part of your homes.

Princeton was where Clean Bee began. I'm so thankful it still feels like home.
