What I Check Before You Move Into a "Clean" Home

What I Check Before You Move Into a "Clean" Home
An empty house is the great deception of moving. No furniture, no clutter, sunlight on bare floors — it looks immaculate. Then you move your life in, and a month later you're finding things you wish you'd handled before the couch went down.
I've cleaned a lot of homes in that in-between moment, after the old owners leave and before the new ones arrive. Here's what an empty house is hiding.
Empty doesn't mean clean
The dirt in a home isn't on the open floor — it's in the places furniture and routine kept covered. When everything's gone, those places are finally reachable, and they're never as clean as the room looks.
The spots I always check first
Inside every cabinet and drawer. Kitchens and bathrooms collect crumbs, sticky rings, and the previous family's dust in places you'll soon be putting your dishes and towels.
Appliance seals and interiors. The rubber gasket on the fridge, the inside of the oven, behind and under both. This is where old kitchens hide the most.
Behind toilets and along bathroom grout. The two spots that tell me instantly whether a home was ever really deep cleaned.
Vents, returns, and the tops of everything. Door frames, closet shelves, ceiling fan blades. Dust falls downward — into the air you're about to breathe.
Whatever the last owners left behind. Cleaning-product residue, a smell you can't place, adhesive from old hooks. Starting fresh means removing their traces, not just your boxes.
Why do it before you move in, not after
Because the house will never again be this empty or this reachable. Once your furniture is in, half these spots disappear behind it for years. Cleaning an empty home takes a fraction of the effort and gets twice the result.
Moving is exhausting enough. Walking into a home that's genuinely, deeply clean — not just empty — is one of the few things that makes it feel like a fresh start.
If a move is coming, tell us about it. We'll have it ready before your first box arrives.
