10 Organization Hacks That Actually Work in a Busy Home
By Cristine DosSantos · December 8, 2025
I clean and organize for a living, and I can tell you that there are days you'd come to my house and it would look like a small storm swept through. I'm a mother of two, so I understand the struggle. Organization isn't about expensive bins or a perfect house. It's about simple systems you can repeat.
The trick I use with my kids
My kids are 8 and 9. To help them, I make small piles: one for clothes, one for toys. A whole messy room is overwhelming for a child. A small pile is something they can finish, so they don't feel lost.
Why this matters to me
I once helped a mother who, like me, was a cleaner herself. She had a newborn and was having a hard time keeping up. It was such a pleasure to see how much peace she had afterward, and how much she could enjoy her baby. Babies change so fast. One week they're blowing raspberries, and then it stops. If you're busy worrying about a messy house, you miss it.
10 hacks that work
Entryway
- One in, one out. For coats, shoes, magazines and toys: when something new comes in, something old gets donated.
- A drop zone by the door. A row of hooks and one small basket just inside the main entry. One hook per person for their bag, and the basket is only for mail, so it doesn't pile up on the kitchen counter.
Kitchen
- Lazy Susans in deep corners. Put them on corner shelves, under the sink and at the back of the pantry, so nothing gets lost in the back.
- Decant only the staples. Don't pour every snack into matching containers. Only decant things that spill or go stale once opened, like flour, sugar, cereal and rice.
- File your bakeware upright. Stand cutting boards, baking sheets and muffin tins vertically with a tension rod or wire rack, so you can pull one out without an avalanche.
Closets
- The backward hanger trick. Turn all your hangers backward. After you wear something, hang it back the normal way. After six months, anything still on a backward hanger is a good candidate to donate.
- File-fold your shirts. Fold T-shirts and jeans into rectangles and stand them upright in the drawer, so you can see everything at once.
Living spaces
- The two-minute rule. If it takes less than two minutes, like putting shoes in the closet or hanging up a towel, do it now.
- Hide the cords. Adhesive clips or Velcro strips along the back of desks and TV stands keep cords out of sight. Cords make a clean room look messy.
- The "maybe" box. Not sure about donating something? Put it in a box, seal it, and write a date six months out. If you never opened it by then, donate it without looking inside.
None of these need to be perfect. Start with one. And if you'd rather have help, we do organizing too.
